In all of my social media classes through Shaw Academy, we have hit on social media platforms and which one’s might be right to use for your specific business. That said it never hurts to be on several platforms, but from a business perspective (especially if you’re the only one managing the business) it’s best to manage only a couple of platforms. Managing a couple of platforms saves time. And there are options in your facebook account you can use to link your accounts together so your facebook post will automatically stream to your Twitter account etc.

A little on Facebook history  from Wiki. Facebook is a social networking service launched on February 4, 2004. Owned and operated by Facebook. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University student Eduardo Saverin. The website’s membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and gradually most universities in Canada and the United States, corporations, and by September 2006, to everyone of age 13 and older with a valid e.mail address.

In the fourth quarter of 2015, Facebook had 1.59 billion monthly active users. Wow!

As far as platforms go Facebook the biggest. According to 2015 statistics.  Facebook stands at 45.4% while YouTube comes in second at 22.2%.

Facebook is easy to set up and many businesses own a facebook account over a website. Facebook also gives you the option of having a personal page and a profile (business) page. The personal page is meant for friends, family, and acquaintances.

The profile page is perfect for businesses. You should set up your page with your business name. From there you can add your information, category (make sure you choose the right one), facebook address, name, description and so on. After those steps add a cover photo and profile photo. Make sure these pictures are of high quality and remember everyone will see them. If you have a local business you can post your hours and location. If your business is the web only you can leave that information blank.

Once you have your information set up you can join groups, gain likes, and invite your friends to like your page. There are so many options:) You also have the ability to share, boost, and promote your posts. *There is a charge for boosting and promoting your posts. And this is one of the reasons I’m back in school. If I’m going to use the promoting tools I want to use them the right way! I also found facebook confusing so it was nice to be taught the “how to” use of this platform.

On the top of your page are the Page, Notifications, Insights, Messages, and Publishing tools links. The messages and notification links are what they say, they show you if you have any new notifications or messages. The Insights page shows you your stats- reach, page likes, people, posts, actions, and engagement. And the publishing tools show your posts, post reach, likes, comments and when your post was published. Facebook is fairly easy to use if you know what you’re doing. If  you don’t understand the ins and outs of Facebook it can become a confusing mess.

As with any of the platforms you use it pays to understand what that platform is about and how it will work for your needs. Remember you have to continually update your page/posts in order for the page to work for you. In other words, if you set it and forget it the page won’t bring in new friends or likes.
